Sushil Kumar to be India's flagbearer at 2012 Olympics

2012 London Olympics

July 15, 2012 - New Delhi

The Indian Olympic Association has announced wrestler Sushil Kumar will be the flag bearer of India in the 2012 London Olympic Games. This puts an end to weeks of speculation on who will carry the honor of being the flag bearer for the Indian contingent. Names of boxer Vijender Singh, tennis legend Leander Paes and ace shooter Abhinav Bindra made rounds in the media earlier.

Sushil Kumar won a bronze medal for the country in the 2008 Beijing Games in wrestling. Along with Sushil, Vijender Singh and Abhinav Bindra also won medals in Beijing. Ace shooter Abhinav Bindra won the country's first gold medal at the Olympics and was the preferred candidate. However, he politely declined the offer to concentrate on preparations for the 10m air rifle event that is scheduled three days after the opening ceremony on July 30. Vijender Singh's weigh-in is also scheduled on July 28 ruling him out to carry the flag in the opening ceremony. The IOC finally decided to give the chance to Sushil Kumar as Leander Paes has led the contingent in 2000 at Sydney.

IOA Acting President VK Malhotra announced at a conference today in New Delhi that Sushil Kumar will lead the honor. Sushil Kumar won the bronze medal for India in the Men's 66kg Freestyle Wresting event at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. He also won the gold medal at the FILA 2010 World Wrestling Championships.
