July 21, 2012 - Mumbai

Former Indian Cricket captain and Pune Warriors India player Sourav Ganguly has come to the support of spinner Rahul Sharma who was tested positive for drugs at a rave party in May. The former Indian captain said that Rahul might have committed the mistake unknowingly.

The Mumbai Police confirmed Saturday that Rahul Sharma along with South African cricketer Wayne Parnell were tested positive for drugs at a rave party at a hotel in Juhu on May 20. The incident happened during the season 5 of the Indian Premier League. They were among the 100 people who were detained by the police on that day. Sourav added that Rahul Sharma should not lose his place in the Indian team because it was an innocent mistake. The incident should also serve as a learning experience for the youngsters, Ganguly said.

The BCCI yesterday said that they will examine the full incident before taking action on Rahul Sharma. BCCI president N Srinivasan said: "I don't know why everyone is in a mood to execute Rahul Sharma without even going into the details. The BCCI will first procure each and every bit of relevant information and then study them before deciding on the course of action". Rahul Sharma denied taking drugs at that time and said that he would retire if he is found guilty. The drugs incident is just of the many controversies have happened during IPL 5. Five uncapped players were caught in a scandal for indulging in corrupt practices like spot-fixing etc.

Police, on the other hand said that all those who were tested positive for drugs will soon be arrested including Rahul Sharma. The spin bowler is currently part of the Indian squad in Sri Lanka.
