Security at Wimbledon doubled over fears of terror attacks

June 26, 2012 - London

UK police chiefs have doubled the number of officers patrolling the Wimbledon tournament over fears of a terror strike.

The Met is worried about fanatics, who could strike the tournament in a bid to derail next month's Olympics, and are reportedly using ASBOs to keep troublemakers at bay.

"The idea is to have a very low-key presence but at the same time keep it robust. If somebody was to do something untoward here it could have a knock-on effect on the Olympics," the Daily Star quoted a police official, as saying.

A no-fly zone, which extends 500ft high and has a 0.75 nautical mile perimeter, has been assigned over the event.
