November 4, 2012 - Aligarh

Samajwadi Party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav has offered a Lok Sabha ticket to Badminton player and Olympic bronze medalist Saina Nehwal. The SP supremo addressed a convocation ceremony of the Mangalayatan University in Aligarh which conferred doctorates to Saina Nehwal and five other Olympic medal winners.

Speaking on the occasion, Mulayam Singh Yadav spoke about higher education in Uttar Pradesh. Praising Saina Nehwal for her achievements in the sport, Mulayam Singh said that his party would be happy to offer her a ticket from Aligarh Lok Sabha seat. Without confirming whether or not she would accept the ticket, Saina Nehwal thanked Mulayam for the offer.

The University has conferred honorary doctorates to Saina Nehwal, Mary Kom, Vijay Kumar, Gagan Narag, Yogeshwar Dutt and Sushil Kumar. Nehwal thanked the university for the honor and said that the university has given her something more than the Olympic medal.

"My parents had wished that I could take up the medical profession but destiny had planned another career for me. But today I am proud that I was being conferred the doctorate," Saina said, while accepting the honorary doctorate.

Even though Saina Nehwal was offered the ticket to contest for the Aligarh Lok Sabha constituency, she is currently not eligible to contest the election as she is only 22 years old. The minimum criterion set to contest for Lok Sabha is any Indian resident who is at least 25 years of age.
