Hamilton believes a flying start to F1 season in Melbourne is crucial

March 16, 2012 - London

McLaren driver Lewis Hamilton has said a podium finish in Melbourne during the Australian Grand Prix could set the right mood for the rest of the season, and also help his contract talks.

"The first few races will definitely play a role. But I'm just trying to focus on getting the first one out of the way and need to try to keep the consistency and get some good results," The Sun quoted Hamilton, as saying.

"I got some good results last year every now and again but I now need to do it on a more regular basis. That is where my main focus is. I'll leave it to my management to take care of the rest," he said.

"It is the whole package when you make a call on your future. It is something that has to be thought about at the right time," he added.

This year will be his sixth in F1, and the 2008 champion has no intention of leaving the sport yet.

"It feels like the first time I came to Melbourne in 2007. I signed some autographs and got a great response," Hamilton said.

"There was also a great buzz when I walked through the gate, it was a proud feeling. It is a great privilege to be here but it is easy to come and go. Let's hope I can stay here," he added.
