'Golden boy' Phelps eyeing 10 Olympic medals in London Games

June 20, 2012 - Sydney

American swimming superstar Michael Phelps has confirmed he will contest in seven individual events in the US swim trials, creating the possibility of an incredible 10-medal haul at the London 2012 Olympics.

"Well I guess the cat is outta the bag... Swimming 7 events at trials... Damn was trying to keep it a secret," the Herald Sun quoted Phelps, as writing on his Twitter site.

If Phelps qualifies in all his events and is then selected in three relays in London, he could well exceed his record-breaking feat of winning eight gold medals at one Olympics, a feat he achieved at the Beijing Olympics just four years ago, the paper said.

For the trials Phelps has signed up for the 200m and 400m individual medley, the 100m and 200m butterfly, the 100m and 200m freestyle and the 200m backstroke.
