Double-amputee runner Oscar Pistorius picked for South African 4x400 relay team

July 4, 2012 - Johannesburg

The biggest news of the day in regard to the 2012 London Olympics is that Double-amputee runner Oscar Pistorius was picked up to be part of the South African 4x400 relay team. This will make Pistorius to play in both the London Olympic and Paralympic Games. Earlier last month, the South African Olympic committee has included him as one of the 13 athletes for the national team.

The 25-year old, fondly called "Blade Runner" because of the fact that he runs on carbon fiber blades, will thus become the first amputee track athlete ever to compete at the games. Pistorius will join his team mates Willem de Beer, Ofentse Mogawane and Shaun de Jager in the 4x400 race. This section is a sort of relief for Pistorius who could not qualify in the individual 400 meters.
