Nation congratulates Vijay Kumar for winning Silver at London Olympics


August 3, 2012 - New Delhi

Olympic silver medalist Vijay Kumar was congratulated by President, Prime Minister and several other dignitaries. In his congratulatory message, Prime Manmohan Singh stated, "I join the nation in congratulating shooter Vijay Kumar for winning the Olympic silver medal in the 25 metre rapid fire pistol event".

Vijay Kumar has won the silver medal in the 25m Rapid Fire Pistol event. He fell short by 4 points to win the gold medal. This is India's fourth medal in shooting in the Olympic history and the second medal in all events at the 2012 London Olympics.

The Himachal Pradesh government has announced a cash reward of Rs. 1 crore for Vijay Kumar late Friday. Chief Minister Prem Kumar Dhumal has said that he would recommend Vijay Kumar for Himachal Gaurav Award.

Union Defence Minister AK Antony congratulated Vijay Kumar saying, "I congratulate Subedar Vijay Kumar for bringing laurels to the country. The defence forces are proud of him."

BJP chief spokesperson Ravi Shankar Prasad said, "We congratulate Vijay Kumar for winning a silver medal for the country. It's a moment of pride for the nation. We wish him best on behalf of the nation and our party,"

Army chief Bikram Singh and the deputy chief Lt Gen Ramesh Halgali also congratulated the shooter.

In shooting, Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore has won the silver medal in 2004 Athens and Abhinav Bindra won the gold in 2008 Beijing Olympics. Gagan Narang has won the bronze medal earlier at the 2012 London Olympics.
