AITA drops Mahesh Bhupathi and Rohan Bopanna for Davis Cup tie

August 18, 2012 - New Delhi

The All India Tennis Association (AITA) has dropped Mahesh Bhupathi and Rohan Bopanna from the Davis Cup for the upcoming tie against New Zealand. The move is viewed as a strong message by the AITA that it would not tolerate indiscipline.

AITA is instead inclined towards sending a young team instead of the experienced Bhupathi and Bopanna. Veteran player Leander Paes and singles player Somdev Devvarman were not considered after they made themselves unavailable for the tie.

The new time chosen by the AITA consists of Yuki Bhambri, Vishnu Vardhan, Saketh Myneni, Divij Sharan, Sanam Singh and Sri Ram Balaji. India will play New Zealand in Chandigarh and would strive to stay in the Asia/Oceania Group I scheduled for September 14-16. Bhambri is the only player in the top 200.

India last played against New Zealand in Davis Cup in 2004 when they won 3-2 in away tie. Their head to head record stands at 3-3.

Mahesh Bhupathi and Rohan Bopanna angered the AITA when they took a stand that they would play only if paired with each other in the 2012 London Olympics. The AITA earlier wanted to pair Leander Paes with Bhupathi.
