Trevor Hohns to help shape Oz Test squad for South African tour

October 15, 2011 - Sydney

Trevor Hohns, one of the contenders to head Australia's revamped selection panel, will have a behind-the-scenes role in shaping the Test squad for South Africa next week.

As Queensland's chairman of selectors and state talent manager, Hohns has acted as the eyes and ears of Cricket Australia's interim selectors at the Queensland-Victoria Sheffield Shield game at the Gabba this week, and will file a report to Greg Chappell, the selector on duty, in South Africa, The Age reports.

Yesterday, Hohns reiterated his interest in returning to the role of the chief selector, who will report to new General Manager, Team Performance (GMTP) Pat Howard.

Rod Marsh, Geoff Lawson, Dean Jones and Ray Bright have also expressed their desire to join the selection panel, which will comprise a full-time chairman and two part-timers, plus team captain Michael Clarke and the new head coach.

"I don't know too much about it, but some weeks ago I did express an interest in finding out what was going on, basically," Hohns was quoted as saying.

"I'm none the wiser. I've had no contact with anybody about keeping an eye on things, however I will certainly be filing a report to Greg Chappell as part as the talent manager's role," he added.

Chappell is expected to stay on as Cricket Australia's national talent manager after the new selection panel is in place.
