Srikkanth terms Harbhajan's exclusion from Oz Test series squad as 'bad luck'

November 26, 2011 - Mumbai

Reacting on the exclusion of Harbhajan Singh from the 17-man squad for the upcoming four-Test series in Australia, BCCI selection panel chairman Krishnamachari Srikkanth said that the team had the talents of Pragyan Ojha, Ravichandran Ashwin and never had more than two spinners travelled Down Under.

"You know the team selects by itself. And in Australia you cannot have more than two spinners. Not many times more than two spinners in the team have gone to Australia. I think Ojha and Ashwin are doing an excellent job," Srikkanth said.

"So, sometimes it becomes bad luck, you cannot help it, and sometimes people miss out. But I am sure everybody has their own time and space to come back whenever they want," he added.

Srikkanth was confident of the team balance by emphasising that the selected team boasts of mixture of youth and experience.

He observed this team had the Arsenal to beat the Aussies in their own backyard, in what is being termed as the litmus test for Team India and captain M.S. Dhoni.

"I think if you ask me a question today, due to think this combination will beat Australia in Australia? I think the answer is yes. I am very confident, by the will of God, we should beat Australia in Australia in the Test series. Our batsmen are fully in form, our bowlers are in form and now we have all kinds of bowlers," he said.

"We have fast bowlers, we have medium fast bowlers, we have swing bowlers, we have spinners, all kinds of spinners, left arm and off spin. So I think, depending on the wicket condition there on a Test match to Test match basis, I am sure the team management committee will select the right team," he added.

The first Test will begin in Melbourne on December 26, and will be followed by matches in Sydney (January 3-7), Perth (January 13-17) and Adelaide (January 24-28).

The series will be followed by two Twenty20 internationals and an ODI tri-series, also featuring Sri Lanka.

Squad: Mahendra Singh Dhoni (captain), Virender Sehwag, Gautam Gambhir, Ajinkya Rahane, Rahul Dravid, Sachin Tendulkar, VVS Laxman, Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, Pragyan Ojha, Ravichandran Ashwin, Ishant Sharma, Umesh Yadav, Varun Aaron, Praveen Kumar, Wriddhiman Saha and Zaheer Khan (subject to fitness).
