South Africa to stage world's richest golf event in 2012

April 13, 2011 - Johannesburg

South Africa will stage the world's richest golf tournament when it launches the 10 million dollar Tournament of Hope as a part of the four-year new World Golf Championship (WGC) in 2012.

"The awarding of this WGC event, which has the biggest prize money in professional golf, shows the rest of the world believe we have good stock and a good product here in South Africa," The Daily Times quoted Sunshine Tour commissioner Gareth Tindall, as saying on Tuesday.

Tindall's announcement came two days after South African Charl Schwartzel's U.S. Masters victory on Sunday.

The Tournament of Hope will be the second WGC event to be staged outside the United States next year, the other is the HSBC Champions in China.

Tindall said the Tournament of Hope could be held at the end of 2012.
