Proteas skipper Smith denies 'quitting captaincy' rumours

December 31, 2011 - Durban

South African skipper Graeme Smith has denied rumours that he was stepping down from the captaincy over his team suffering a 208-run defeat against Sri Lanka at Kingsmead.

"That's not the case at all. As long as (Gary Kirsten) and the team want me in the job, I'll do the job," Sport 24 quoted Smith, as saying.

"For as long as I'm wanted as captain, I'll get in and do the job to the best of my ability. Unfortunately, when you lose in the manner that we did today, there are disappointing stories out there but I think that one was a bit too much," he added.

His comments came after a Twitter post had suggested Smith has resigned and added that he was dissatisfied with team selection for the forthcoming Test in Cape Town.

Sri Lanka bounced back from an innings defeat at SuperSport Park to level the three-Test series against South Africa.
