Ponting will be remembered as one of Australia's great captains: Mark Waugh

March 29, 2011 - Melbourne

Former Australian batsman Mark Waugh has said that Ricky Ponting's record as captain means that he will be remembered as one of the greats.

"His record as captain is very good. His winning ratio is extremely high. Statistically he's going to go down as one of Australia's great captains, there's no doubt about it," Fox Sports quoted Waugh, as saying.

"There have been times when his tactics have been questioned and there are a couple of games where he may have done things differently if he looked back, but that's nit-picking really."

"He's a great leader of men, he's got a lot of respect from the players and he's a great player. You've got to say that he's going to look back with great pride and adulation at what he's done as captain," he added.

It comes after Ponting announced stepping down from captaincy of both Test and one-day teams with immediate effect.

"I've had the chance to think long and hard about it. I have decided to stand down from the test and one-day team as of now," Ponting said.

"Getting through the Ashes series the way that we did and with the World Cup now being over, I wanted to make sure I give the next captain every opportunity I possibly could to make sure he as much experience going forward. I felt it was an opportune time and the timing was spot on," he added.

Waugh further said that he supports Ponting's decision to play on under the leadership of another captain.

"Why not? We've seen guys like Sachin Tendulkar in the best form of his career into his late 30's. Ricky's still very fit and obviously he's very hungry, so he's got a lot to offer just as a player and as a back-up to Michael Clarke in regards to tactics and bringing young players on," Waugh said.

"I think that hundred in the last World Cup game proved that - under pressure and in big games he's still one of our best players. So, I'm sure he's got a couple of good years left in him in both Test cricket and one-day cricket," he added.
