Outraged fans slam 'gutted Rooney' over aggression leading to three-match ban

October 15, 2011 - London

Angry fans have slammed Wayne Rooney for his erratic behaviour that led to a three-match ban during the Euro 2012.

The Manchester United player will miss all three of England's group matches after being sent off in the 2-2 draw with Montenegro.

Meanwhile, his fans have expressed disappointment over the ban on Twitter.

"Gutted Rooney, footballs all about skill not aggression, moron!" wrote lydiaagreenm on Twitter, while another wrote: "Its fun being an England fan. Opposition have no worries, we beat ourselves before we start," Sky News reports.

Former England striker Alan Shearer said the ban was a "huge blow" and called the kick "a stupid error".

"It's not only a huge blow to the team, to the fans and to football followers but to Wayne himself because he realises he's made a stupid error.

But Rooney's former Manchester United and England team-mate Phil Neville, now with Everton, labelled the ruling "a joke," on Twitter.

"Rooney banned for 3 games what a joke - if it was a Dutch Spanish Italian german player they wouldn't even get 1 game fact," he added.
