October 27, 2011 - Lahore

The appointment of Zaka Ashraf as the new chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has been challenged in the Lahore High Court (LHC).

On Wednesday, LHC Chief Justice Ijaz Ahmad Chaudhry admitted a petition challenging Ashraf's appointment as the new PCB chief for regular hearing, The Daily Times reports.

The petition stated that Ashraf's appointment was not on merit and merely a political one.

Ashraf, former chairman of Zarai Taraqiati Bank Limited (ZPTL), was appointed as PCB chief by President Asif Ali Zardari after Ijaz Butt's three-year contract ended on October 8. he petitioner's counsel said that as per the International Cricket Council (ICC) rules, direct appointments in the PCB could not be made, and that the boad's general council had the right to elect its chairman.

He requested the LHC to declare the appointment as illegal and an unconstitutional act.

He also submitted to restrain Ashraf from performing duties as PCB chairman.

The LHC Chief Justice has sought reply from the federal government in this regard till November 4, the report said.
