In form Cook could put heat on skipper Strauss

June 23, 2011 - London

Former England skipper Michael Vaughan fears a glut of one-day runs from in form Alastair Cook could put pressure on incumbent Test skipper Andrew Strauss, even as the latter turns out for Somerset to get match fit for the series against India.

In-form Cook will lead the ODI side, with Stuart Broad in charge for the Twenty20 international at Bristol on Saturday.

It is not a new concept, with Vaughan himself starting as one-day captain under Nasser Hussain in 2003 before taking on the Test job later that summer.

And the 2005 Ashes winner, who had Paul Collingwood as one-day skipper towards the end of his reign, believes out-of-form Strauss must up his Test contributions to keep any doubters at bay.

He told SunSport: "A lot was made of Nasser and myself when we split the captaincy. I had a completely different approach and it stood out.

He added: "The dressing room started to like it and he didn't feel comfortable when I came back for the Tests. That's a personal decision. I had no problem. Some people said it didn't work when I was Test captain and Paul Collingwood took over the one-day side either."
