Harris expects Cummins to play in Australia-South Africa Tests

October 31, 2011 - Johannesburg

Australian fast bowler Ryan Harris has said that he would be surprised if young tyro Pat Cummins doesn't earn a baggy green in the first Test against South Africa.

Thirty-two-year-old Harris and left-arm fast bowler Mitchell Johnson are heavily favoured to occupy two of the pace roles for the first Test in Cape Town starting on November 9.

But Harris said no one, including himself, can expect to walk into the team.

He said that he has been impressed with what he's seen of Cummins so far, and added that he would relish playing alongside the 18-year-old.

"From what I've heard and what I've spoken to The Other Guys about, he's got a really good head on his shoulders. He's quite smart and knows his game ... so if he plays, which I'll be surprised if he doesn't, it'd be great either bowling next to him or watching him bowl," The Sydney Morning Herald quoted Harris, as saying.

He added: "What I've seen so far has been very, very impressive and, for a guy at 18, he's bowled fast in the one-dayers. He's only played very limited four-day cricket but I saw him bowl in the Shield final last year (for NSW) and he bowled a lot of overs and didn't drop a lot of pace which is even better."

While the make-up of Australia's side for the four-day tour game was not yet known, the most interesting scenario would be if Harris and Johnson were both rested from the match.

That would allow the remaining three quicks to battle for that third position in the attack for the first Test.

"I'm definitely not, and I don't think anyone is expecting to walk into the team. There's five quicks here and, potentially, any one of them could play," said Harris.

Australian Test squad: Michael Clarke (capt), Shane Watson (vc), Michael Beer, Trent Copeland, Patrick Cummins, Brad Haddin (wkt), Ryan Harris, Phil Hughes, Mike Hussey, Mitchell Johnson, Usman Khawaja, Nathan Lyon, Shaun Marsh, Ricky Ponting, Peter Siddle.
