Gambhir to lead India against Windies in one-day tour

May 13, 2011 - Chennai

Opening batsman Gautam Gambhir will lead a 16-member Indian side against the West Indies in one Twenty20 match and five one-day internationals. The tour begins from June 4.

The selection committee chaired by Krishnamachari Srikanth has decided to give first-choice players-Sachin Tendulkar, MS Dhoni, Zaheer Khan and Virender Sehwag a rest. Not much weightage has been given to performances in the Indian Premier League.

Emphasis has been placed on performance in the domestic first class competition, as can be seen by the selection of Tamil Nadu middle order batsman S Badrinath and his Mumbai counterpart Rohit Sharma, both of whom were the two top scorers in the last Ranji Trophy season.

Gujarat's wicketkeeper-batsman Parthiv Patel too has made the squad on the basis of the runs scored in the Ranji Trophy.

R Vinay Kumar, Ishant Sharma and Amit Mishra replace Ashish Nehra (injured), Sreesanth and Piyush Chawla (both dropped). Praveen Kumar duly took his place back, having recovered from the injury that had kept him out of the World Cup. He replaces Zaheer Khan, who has been rested.

The exclusion of M Vijay - who has a highest of 33 in 11 ODI innings - makes Parthiv the likeliest candidate to open the innings with the captain, Gambhir.

Gambhir will be leading India for the second time, having first led the national squad against New Zealand in one-day series, which the hosts won five nil last year.

The selectors are believed to be impressed with his leadership skills, and are likely to make him full-time vice-captain ahead of the slightly reluctant Sehwag.

The squad is as follows: Gautam Gambhir (captain), Suresh Raina, Parthiv Patel (wk), Virat Kohli, Yuvraj Singh, S Badrinath, Rohit Sharma, Harbhajan Singh, R Ashwin, Praveen Kumar, Ishant Sharma, Munaf Patel, Vinay Kumar, Yusuf Pathan, Amit Mishra, Wriddhiman Saha (wk).
