Flower backs Prior over 'freak accident'

June 9, 2011 - London

England cricket team coach Andy Flower has backed wicketkeeper batsman Matt Prior over the 'freak accident' that broke a window at the Lord's cricket ground.

"I was two metres away when it happened and there was no real malicious intent at all. Matt was a little frustrated and shoved his bat in the corner and it knocked around, bounced off one or two other bats, and then hit the pane of glass. It was a freak accident, but definitely an accident," The Telegraph quoted Flower, as saying.

"It is not a major incident by any stretch of the imagination, and it is a shame that people will think anything other than that. If there was more to it, then of course it should be taken further. But there really is not," he added.

Cited by the match umpires, Billy Doctrove and Rod Tucker, as well as the third and fourth umpires, the match referee Javagal Srinath had little choice but to warn Prior as to his future behaviour, after he breached the code which relates to the abuse of cricket equipment or fixtures and fittings during an international match.
