Cowan, Marsh in; Harris, Watson excluded for India-Oz Boxing Day Test

December 21, 2011 - Melbourne

Openers Ed Cowan and Shaun Marsh have been included in Australia's squad for the Boxing Day Test against India, while injured duo Ryan Harris and Shane Watson have been excluded.

"Shane Watson was not considered for selection as he has not recovered sufficiently from his (hamstring/calf) injury, while Ryan Harris has not yet achieved the volume of bowling required to be available for consideration for Test selection," Fox Sports quoted Australia's selection head John Inverarity, as saying, after announcing 13-member squad for the match.

The selection of Cowan comes after he scored a century for Australia A against New Zealand and struck another ton for the Chairman's XI against India in Canberra.

Inverarity said Marsh would play only if he is found fit, and added that Dan Christian would replace him if he failed to clear the fitness test.

Marsh would bat at No. 3, while Christian would bat at No. 6. The batting order would be shuffled if Marsh was excluded for the Test, Inverarity added.

Inverarity confirmed Cowan would open the batting with David Warner.

"Ed Cowan has been in excellent form in recent weeks. His inclusion is in recognition of his consistently good performances and we anticipate that he can provide steadiness at the top of the order," Inverarity said.

"We see both Phillip Hughes and Usman Khawaja as developing players with bright futures and remaining as players of significance. They are determined young men and I know that they will work hard to produce compelling performances and push strongly for further consideration," he added.atson and Harris are expected to recover sufficiently, ahead of the Boxing Day Test.
