Clarke will face awkward start as one-day captain: Julian

March 29, 2011 - Melbourne

Michael Clarke faces an awkward initiation as Australian captain if Ricky Ponting remains in the one-day side as a batsman only, former teammate Brendon Julian has said.

Julian's comments come after Ponting announced he is relinquishing the captaincy of the national team at a press conference held at the Sydney Cricket Ground.

"I just think it might be a bit difficult for Michael Clarke being captain of the side, but also having the ex-captain in the side as well," Fox Sports quoted Julian, as saying.

"If you've got Michael Clarke, Mike Hussey and Ricky Ponting in the side it makes it quite difficult for the side to move on and move forward quite quickly."

"There's no doubt he's good enough to play in the one-day side, but I'm not sure that he needs to keep playing one-day cricket," he added.

The 40-year-old further reckons that it is an ideal time for Ponting to retire from international cricket.

"He has nothing more to prove in one-day cricket. I'm not sure why the selectors would allow him to continue and play on in the side. I cannot remember the last time an Australian captain didn't captain the side, but continued on and played as well," Julian said.

"I just think the way the team is moving at the moment I'd be surprised if the selectors say we'll let you keep on and keep batting," he added.
