British Open champion Clarke enjoys all-night bender

July 19, 2011 - London

British Open champion Darren Clarke, 42, enjoyed an all night bender on Sunday after landing the Claret Jug trophy and only decided to surface before the media on Monday.

According to The Sun, Darren told a 9 a.m. press conference that he went from sinking putts to sinking pints after his first Major victory - and had not been to bed.

He played 70 shots in the last round to land the Claret Jug trophy and joked he had downed almost as many drinks.

He said: "I've not been to bed yet. There's no surprise really, is there? I probably won't get any sleep until tomorrow. You have to enjoy it when you can."

He added: "I had quite a few pints and quite a few glasses of red wine, and it all continued until about 30 minutes ago. It's been a very good night."

The Ulsterman is famous for knowing how to celebrate, like England's boozy cricket star Flintoff after the 2005 Ashes victory. arren famously downed a pint of Guinness in one gulp after Europe's 2006 Ryder Cup win.

The 16 stone star, whose wife Heather died of Breast cancer in 2006, was supposed to start a diet but postponed it to party.

Fiancee Alison Campbell, 46, said: "WeightWatchers is on hold. I love him no matter what weight he is."
