July 19, 2011 - London

British Open champion Darren Clarke almost quit golf just four months ago when he bombed out in Morocco.

The struggling Ulsterman finished with rounds of 81 and 75 to finish 77th in the Trophee Hassan II and wondered if he still had a future in the game, reports The Sun.

After watching Clarke, 42, become the toast of golf with Sunday's win at Sandwich, his manager, Chubby Chandler, revealed: "Darren was so low he thought about giving up. It was the lowest I had ever seen him. He was not hitting the ball like he used to."

He added: "There was a tournament coming up in Malaysia but I told him not to go and take an extra week's holiday. He went away for three weeks, came back and won in Majorca."

Now, Clarke is set to cash in on his new found fame with Chandler promising "lots and lots" of money.

He picked up 900,000 pounds for winning in Kent and a two million pound bonus from sponsors Dunlop to add to his 19 million pound fortune.handler added: "Darren is great for sponsors. And he is big in Japan where he is really popular.
