Australia-Sri Lanka World Cup match called off due to rain

March 5, 2011 - Colombo

The World Cup match between defending champions Australia and Sri Lanka at Colombo's R. Premasada Stadium was abandoned due to bad weather on Saturday.

Play was officially called off at 7.51p.m. local time with Sri Lanka 146-3 in the 33rd over after captain Kumar Sangakkara won the toss and opted to bat first, the Herald Sun reports.

Sangakkara and Thilan Samaraweera were batting on 73 and 34 respectively when conditions turned nasty with monsoonal downpour.

The two sides received one point each for the no-result.

Australia will now play Kenya in their next World Cup in Bangalore on March 13.
