Aston Villa close in on Martinez as boss

June 9, 2011 - London

Aston Villa aims to make Roberto Martinez their new manager.

Club owner Randy Lerner got permission from Wigan to talk to their boss after he bowed to fan pressure and snubbed Steve McClaren.

The ex-England boss was Villa's top choice to replace Gerard Houllier and a meeting in London between McClaren and the board had been arranged for this morning.

But that rendezvous, put in place on Tuesday, was cancelled in a dramatic U-turn as Villa made their move to Wigan, The Sun reports.

Ex-Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez had also been given an invite to meet in London but Lerner changed his mind on the Spaniard too after holding preliminary talks.

Martinez, who steered Wigan to safety in the Premier League this season after a nail-biting final day, will today meet the Villa board after cutting short his holiday.
