October 28, 2011 - New Delhi

India's Sports Minister, Ajay Maken released the biography of ace Indian shooter Abhinav Bindra here on Thursday.

The book has been written by sportswriter Rohit Brijnath and published by Harper Collins.

Maken lauded the 2008 Beijing Olympics gold medallist, saying that his was an example of how to succeed at the international level, even when support from the government was not always forthcoming.

"Abhinav Bindra has already created history. The best part is that he has been able to achieve this feat without much support from the government or from anyone else. I think he is an example for the others to who want to excel in life," said Maken.

Bindra said that it was his hope to inspire Indian sportspersons of the future and encourage them to eclipse his success by a great margin.

"It gave me an opportunity to look back at my career, look back at all that I did and share my experience with young athletes. Hopefully they will benefit from it, and perhaps draw a little bit of inspiration and achieve much more success than I did," Bindra said.

Abhinav Bindra won gold in the 10-metre air rifle event at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. His feat made him India's first ever individual gold medallist, and brought to the country its first Olympic gold after the hockey medal in the 1980 Moscow games.
