Pak envoy to UK launches diatribe against ICC suspension of 'tainted' players

Pakistans Ambassador to UK, Wajid Shamsul Hasan, has slammed the International Cricket Council for suspending the three players accused of spot-fixing in the Lords Test against England.

London, Sep 3: Pakistan's Ambassador to UK, Wajid Shamsul Hasan, has slammed the International Cricket Council for suspending the three players accused of 'spot-fixing' in the Lord's Test against England.

Hasan's attack came after Pakistan captain Salman Butt and bowlers Mohammad Asif and Mohammad Amir were charged with multiple breaches of the ICC's anti-corruption rules and were suspended with immediate effect.

"They (the ICC) have done the wrong thing. When there's a live police inquiry, this takes precedence over both the ICC, civil or regulatory investigations and any disciplinary investigations," The Telegraph quoted Hasan, as saying.

"To take action now is unhelpful, premature and unnecessary considering the players had already voluntarily withdrawn from playing."

"The ICC had no business to take this action. The ICC is just playing to the public gallery," he added.

Wasan further said that he had met the cricketers, and was sure that they are innocent.

Earlier, the ICC had said that the three players were provisionally suspended pending a decision on the charges.

"In accordance with the provisions of the code, this means they are immediately barred from participating in all cricket and related activities until the case has been concluded," the ICC had said in a statement.

The Pakistan team is in the midst of a betting scam, where fast bowlers Amir and Asif are alleged to have bowled pre-arranged no-balls in the Lord's Test, which England won by an innings and 225 runs.

British tabloid The News of the World has claimed that the cricketers were part of a 150,000-pound betting scam with Butt and London-based agent Mazhar Majeed.
