Netball referees face meal, transport and uniform problems at Delhi CWG

After Sundays grand Commonwealth Games opening, the organizers are now busy with meeting fresh security and other concerns that have left referees without basics such as uniforms.

Sydney, Oct 4 : After Sunday's grand Commonwealth Games opening, the organizers are now busy with meeting fresh security and other concerns that have left referees without basics such as uniforms.

Last-minute crisis discussions were being held on Sunday after a leading Games netball official warned that fixtures could be suspended if the problems were not addressed.

Tournament referee Lindy Murphy, netball's technical delegate for the Games, said buses were arriving late to collect match personnel from their hotels, while technical officials were yet to be given an allowance to pay for meals.

Uniforms were also not ready despite the tournament being scheduled to start with Australia's opening match against Samoa at Thyagaraj Sports Complex today.

"Security has become so tight that we can't get in items such as pens, mobile phones, coins, and today my asthma pump was nearly taken off me," The Sydney Morning Herald quoted Murphy, as saying.

Referee concerns were floated at Saturday's general assembly attended by each team chef de mission of the 71 competing nations and territories.

Australia's representative Steve Moneghetti has expressed confidence the row will be resolved in the 24 hours leading up to the start of competition.
