New Zealand contingent leader Irene van Dyk has described the opening ceremony of the XIXth Commonwealth Games held here as fantastic, brilliant and incredible.

New Delhi, Oct. 4 : New Zealand contingent leader Irene van Dyk has described the opening ceremony of the XIXth Commonwealth Games held here as fantastic, brilliant and incredible.

The 38-year-old Silver Fern, never scared to gush, said that she was lost for words after the ceremony wrapped up, and added that it definitely was the highlight of her sporting life.

"You do some incredible things in your life and you see some incredible things, but this was something else. Honestly, it was fantastic, brilliant, incredible," stuff.co.nz quoted her, as saying.

New Zealand received one of the loudest welcomes to Delhi's Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, well behind the hosts.

"These people are so loud and so supportive, it was fantastic," van Dyk said.

Meanwhile, a large group of New Zealand athletes were unable to attend the spectacular opening ceremony but they had their own party in the village.

The Black Sticks women's hockey team, the New Zealand table tennis players, swimmers and badminton all missed the carnival style opening because they compete later today.

The track cyclists, who claim they are not the rock stars of the team, chose not to attend, but are not competing later today.
