'Delhi belly' bug hits Oz swimming stars Hurley and Napoleon

Australian swimmers Robert Hurley and Ryan Napoleon suffered were hit by the Delhi-belly bug after eating at the Commonwealth Games village but were able to recover in time to compete this morning in 400m freestyle event.

New Delhi, Oct 4 : Australian swimmers Robert Hurley and Ryan Napoleon suffered were hit by the 'Delhi-belly' bug after eating at the Commonwealth Games village but were able to recover in time to compete this morning in 400m freestyle event.

Hurley, who was one of the favourites for the gold in the 400m freestyle, failed to qualify for the final, while Napoleon surged home in a time of 3.51.06 to qualify third fastest.

The two ate together at the casual dining area at the Games village last night and were hit by stomach upsets hours later, The Herald Sun reported.

Hurley said they ate meat Bolognese pasta, and by about 2 a.m. thought, "we're in trouble".

The two swimmers share a room, which made the problem even worse.

"Eating that meal wasn't a good move. By 2am we were both crook. It was like a relay, we were passing the baton, although it was really the toilet paper," Hurley said on Monday.

Hurley, who has been battling a mystery virus since the Pan Pacific championship, said his existing illness combined with the food poisoning had knocked him around.

Napoleon was confident the setback wouldn't affect his medal hopes.

"I'm more worried about my poor preparation than I am about the food poisoning. That won't affect me tonight," he said.
