Melbourne, Oct 15 : Captain Ricky Ponting, who is dealing with Australia's longest Test match losing streak in the last 22 years, has admitted that players outside the Test XI could force their way into the side for the Ashes battle in Brisbane.he series defeat in India has provided an opportunity to the likes of all-rounder Steve Smith, batsmen Callum Ferguson, Phillip Hughes, Usman Khawaja and emerging spinner Stephen O'Keefe to perform in the Sheffield Shield or ODI matches against India and Sri Lanka.

Australia slumped to fifth in the world Test rankings, and is reeling from three straight defeats for the first time since 1988.

"Anyone who is out of this squad at the moment, if they keep scoring runs and keep putting their hands up, we'll wait and see what happens when the selections come around for Brisbane," Ponting said.

"All any of us can do is play the best cricket we can. I've got to make as many runs as I can, as do the rest of the players in this squad," The Daily Telegraph quoted him, as saying.

Test players will take part in at least one Shield game before the Ashes. Most of them will play two matches ahead of selection.

"I'll be playing my first game for NSW. That'll be interesting. It's going to be pretty strange putting on a blue cap. For a Queenslander, it's going to be a little bit different. Stuart Clark is supposedly booked in to present my cap. That'll be quite funny," Watson said.
