Manchester United coach Sir Alex Ferguson has promised the five survivors of the teams 1958 squad that he wont let them down during todays European Champions League final match with Chelsea.
London, May 21 : Manchester United coach Sir Alex Ferguson has promised the five survivors of the team's 1958 squad that he won't let them down during today's European Champions League final match with Chelsea.
Five of the original Busby Babes will be present at Moscow's Luzhniki Stadium tonight, giving emotional support to the current Manchester United team, as it commemorates the 50th anniversary of an air crash that claimed the lives of 23 people, including eight ace Manchester United players.
Sir Bobby Charlton, Bill Foulkes, Harry Gregg, Albert Scanlon and Kenny Morgans have all been given VIP treatment by United, and Ferguson said: "We won't let you down". "The pressure is on us to do well in this final. We gave the Champions League higher priority this season bearing in mind what happened 50 years ago," The Sun quoted Ferguson, as saying.
"There was an unexpressed vow by everybody at the club to pay proper respect to that great team of 1958. It has been on everyone's mind," Ferguson added. erguson is determined to redress the imbalance in United's modern European record, despite worries over the fitness of defender Nemanja Vidic and striker Louis Saha.
United have overtaken Real Madrid as the team who have played the most games, and collected the most wins and points since the European Cup was revamped into the Champions League in 1992-93. But whereas Real have won it nine times in all, United have only recorded two triumphs, which cover the old and new formats.
