London, Mar.7 : Gary Lineker has emerged as the overwhelmingly popular candidate to spearhead the Football Association's bid to host the 2018 World Cup.
The BBC pundit and former England striker is being compared with Lord Coe, who headed the successful 2012 London Olympic campaign, as the 'face' of the bid, which will be launched with FIFA in May.
The FA are in the process of drawing up candidates for the 2018 World Cup Company, and Lineker is even being mooted as a possible chairman.
The company will be heavily unbalanced if it contains all the usual suits from FA headquarters, government circles and captains of industry.Gary had a heavy workload leading up to the 2006 World Cup bid but when he was asked to assist, he was delighted to help out ne of the game's most influential sources told the Daily Express: "The rationale is that Seb Coe was hugely successful with the Olympic bid, and if you have a winning formula, why change it? Gary is the ideal man to lead the World Cup bid in the way Seb Coe was the face of the Olympics.
"Gary is associated with the medals he has won as a footballer, and the glory he brought to the game, while he is still very much in the public eye because of his work with the BBC," he added.
