Capello tips Germany to win EURO 2008

England coach Fabio Capello believes that Germany could well be crowned European champions this summer.

London, June 7 : England coach Fabio Capello believes that Germany could well be crowned European champions this summer.

Although the Euro 2008 tournament promises to be one of the tightest to call in recent years, the Italian thinks Joachim Loew's side have the edge despite failing to win any of their last six matches in the tournament since winning Euro '96.

Capello believes Germany's winning mentality makes them the team to beat while also the tournament's close proximity to their homeland gives them another advantage.

"Germany are one of my favourites - along with France, Italy, Spain and possibly Portugal," The Sun quoted Capello, as saying.

With two teams qualifying from a group, which also comprises hosts Austria, Poland and Croatia, the Germans seem a sure-fire bet for the quarterfinals at the very worst.

"They are a strong team and I think Germany and Croatia will be first or second in their group. Although Austria will be playing at home that is not enough because their quality is not so high compared to the others," he said.

Germany's squad is made up mainly of players from their own Bundesliga, led by champions Bayern Munich.

"Clubs like Bayern Munich are very good - good enough to be competitive in Europe - but when the players play with the national team they are very strong and play better, always, with a lot of confidence," Capello said.
