Chris Rogers is all set to make his Test debut tomorrow at Perth after Matthew Hayden was ruled out with an hamstring injury.
Sydney, Jan 15 : Chris Rogers is all set to make his Test debut tomorrow at Perth after Matthew Hayden was ruled out with an hamstring injury.
Hayden was ruled out after a fitness test with physiotherapist Alex Kountouris today, and a meeting with Ponting, coach Tim Nielsen and chairman of selectors Andrew Hilditch.
Aussies captain Ricky Ponting confirmed that Hayden had not "sufficiently overcome" soreness in his right hamstring and that he was too great a risk to take into the third Test of the ongoing India-Australia Test series.
He added that Hayden, who has not missed a Test since 2000, could run at about 70 per cent capacity, but was not worth taking the risk as he could not call on a runner in the match with an existing injury.
"Hayden is not fit, hasn't come up as you would have noticed by the way he's moving around the field today. So Rogers will make his debut tomorrow, which is a terrific achievement for him, someone who's been in the wings for the last couple of years," an AAP report quoted Ponting as saying.
He added that Rogers (30) deserved his chance after strong form for Western Australia over the last few seasons. "He's obviously very excited and over the moon and has got some good form under his belt leading into the Test match, so it's a good opportunity for him," said Ponting.
Besides Rogers, fast bowler Shaun Tait will also come into the side, as Australia opted for an all-pace attack for the first time since 1992. Tait will replace Brad Hogg, who has been included as the 12th man.
The Australian team announced for the third Test as follows: Ricky Ponting (c), Adam Gilchrist, Phil Jaques, Chris Rogers, Mike Hussey, Michael Clarke, Andrew Symonds, Brett Lee, Mitchell Johnson, Stuart Clark, Shaun Tait, Brad Hogg (12th man).
