Cricket Australia may clear Gilly to play IPL

Cricket Australia has reportedly cleared outgoing Australian wicketkeeper batsman Adam Gilchrist to play the Indian Premier League tournament from April this year, waiving aside a two-year moratorium for retiring players.

Sydney, Feb.6 : Cricket Australia has reportedly cleared outgoing Australian wicketkeeper batsman Adam Gilchrist to play the Indian Premier League tournament from April this year, waiving aside a two-year moratorium for retiring players.

Gilchrist's manager, Stephen Atkinson, said Cricket Australia had told his client that they had no problems with him playing the IPL.

Cricket nations are worried some of their top stars could quit national duties prematurely in the quest for big money being offered by the IPL franchises, and the BCCI agreed players had to be retired for two years before joining a team.

Gilchrist is a man in demand even in the twilight of his playing career, with CA preparing to secure his services in a coaching or promotional capacity.

CA chief executive James Sutherland will meet Gilchrist soon to determine which avenues the 36-year-old wishes to explore.

Atkinson said Gilchrist would have plenty of time to fulfil his duties with CA and play in the IPL.

"They play cricket for two months of the year, so when he retires, he'll have 10 months up his sleeve. He will have the time," Atkinson said.
