World No. 21 Vera Zvonareva heads to India high on hope and confidence for the Bangalore Open which begins on March 3. Having lost the final in three sets at Doha last week to Maria Sharapova, Zvonareva has decided to take a break before heading to Bangalore.

"It's been a great week for me in Doha. Of course I wish I could do better in the finals, but I still have lots of things to work on . But no matter what, I'm glad I was improving with every match and it was great to make a final in the first event after I was injured in Australia. I will spend a couple of days in Moscow arelaxing and get ready for Bangalore. I'm excited about going to India, especially since I never played there. I like to discover new places and I will try to play my best out there," said Zvonareva from Moscow today.

Zvonareva is a powerful, all court tennis player. She has a deep understanding of the game, strikes the ball with both finesse and precision, combining strength and speed. She is not just another player on the tour, she is capable of getting on the top 10 list of the WTA tour.

In this new era of power players like the Williams sisters, Vera Zvonareva has proved that she can be a formidable contender against players that strike the ball hard. Also, during the last couple of years, she has made an impressive and sustained climb in the WTA rankings, positioning herself in the top 20.

Although Vera Zvonareva is relatively a young player on the tour she has already won a WTA title and is surely going to stay on top of the fight to obtain more trophies and points.

Born in a family of sportsmen, her mother Natalya Bykova played field hockey and was a bronze medallist at the Moscow Olympic Games in 1980. Her father Igor Zvonarev participated in USSR championship on bandy.

Mother brought Vera to sports club "Chajka" when she was 6 years old. Her first coach was Ekaterina Ivanovna Kryuchkova. Even then Vera stood out against the background of not only people of her age, but also of her seniors.

At that time Zvonareva didn't think about professional career and played tennis mostly for pleasure. But with her first victories, she had to face a choice, and Vera decided to devote her life to sports.

The 2007's season was very difficult because Vera injured her left wrist. She had to concede her semi-final last April in Stanford because of this. Vera sat out for five month and was on rehab.

Vera finished the 2007 season at a ranking of 22.She likes traveling. Other interests include volleyball, hockey . She says she also likes reading and listening to music.
