Islamabad, Apr 3 : The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) on Thursday sued pacer Shoaib Akhtar for three million dollars for making allegedly defamatory remarks against it after the board imposed a five-year ban on him
On Tuesday, the PCB imposed a five-year ban on Shoaib for repeatedly breaching the players' code of conduct.
"We demand immediate retraction of allegations from Shoaib Akhtar in various statements which were malicious and baseless," PCB chairman Nasim Ashraf told a foreign news agency.
"He must apologise and pay damages of 100 million rupees to the PCB and damages of 100 million rupees to me," added.
In a letter made public by the board, Ashraf 's counsels have demanded the money for a "malicious and vile piece of defamation" allegedly made by Akhtar in a television interview on Wednesday.
The letter further stated that if Shoaib Akhtar fails to pay the damages the board would be authorized to take further legal action against him.
Meanwhile, Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) Vice President Lalit Modi has said that Akhtar cannot participate in Indian Premier League (IPL) until the PCB lifts the ban on him.
Akhtar had termed the PCB's decision as unfair and malafide during a television interview, and added that he was awarded a major punishment for a minor offence. Shoaib had said that he would file an appeal with the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) against the ban and would even go to the Pakistan Supreme Court to seek justice. He charged the board with being prejudiced against him.
