Malaysia to deploy police commandos for Mondays Olympic torch relay

The Malaysian Government on Saturday said that it would deploy police commandos for Mondays 16.5-km-long Olympic torch relay through Kuala Lumpur.

Kuala Lumpur, Apr.19 : The Malaysian Government on Saturday said that it would deploy police commandos for Monday's 16.5-km-long Olympic torch relay through Kuala Lumpur.

Local newspapers quoted government sources as saying that pre-emptive measures have been put in place to block attempts to disrupt the relay.

There were some concerns on Friday when about 20 Falun Gong followers protested outside the Chinese embassy in Kuala Lumpur.

The Star newspaper quoted the city's police internal security chief, K. Kumaran, as saying that all necessary precautions have been taken to counter expected protests.

The official China Daily on Saturday quoted French ambassador to China, Herve Ladsous, as saying he regretted what had happened during the Paris leg of the relay.

Ambassador Ladsous also said that he would like to meet the disabled Chinese Jin Jing who was targetted and injured by the protesters.

The Olympic Games take place in Beijing from August 8 to 24.
