IPL can cause disrupt international cricket calendar: Stephen Fleming

Former New Zealand skipper Stephen Fleming has said the growth of regional tournaments on the lines of the Indian Premier League (IPL) will disrupt the international cricket calendar.

Chennai, Apr 14 : Former New Zealand skipper Stephen Fleming has said the growth of regional tournaments on the lines of the Indian Premier League (IPL) will disrupt the international cricket calendar.

"Tournaments like this, regional tournaments will bear development in other countries. I am worried about the amount of one-day cricket, how much appeal one-day cricket is going to have with tournaments like this. I think te majority feels that it could cause a problem for the international calendar," Fleming told reporters here on Sunday.

Besides Fleming, some of the other noted overseas players who would be wielding the willow for the 'Chennai Super Kings', led by the Indian One-day team captain M.S. Dhoni, are Mathew Hayden, Jacob Oram and Michael Hussey.

The IPL is a new Twenty20 concept unveiled by the BCCI to be played along the lines of the English Premier League football and the National Basketball Association in the US.

The championship will feature eight franchisees -- Bangalore, Chennai, Delhi, Hyderabad, Jaipur, Kolkata, Mohali and Mumbai.

During the IPL Twenty20 matches, 59 matches will be played over span of 44 days, starting April 18.
