New Delhi, Nov 27 : The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has announced that former South Africa opener Gary Kirsten is front-runner for the post of Indian cricket team coach.

According to reports, Kirsten was interviewed here last night by a panel headed by former captains Sunil Gavaskar and Ravi Shastri.

The name of the new coach is likely to be announced next week.

Earlier on Monday, the Coach Selection Committee members met Kirsten in Mumbai, and also held a meeting at the Board President Sharad Pawar's residence in New Delhi.

Former captain S Venkatraghavan, treasurer N Srinivasan, the Board secretary Niranjan Shah and India's Test captain Anil Kumble were also present during the meting.

The post has been vacant since Australia's Greg Chappell resigned from the job when India failed in the first round of the World Cup in the West Indies.
