BCCI panel to discuss new contract with players after Bangladesh tour

A two-member panel of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) will review a new contract for players, drawn up in the wake of the teams shock exit from the 2007 World Cup.

New Delhi/Kolkata, May 6 : A two-member panel of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) will review a new contract for players, drawn up in the wake of the team's shock exit from the 2007 World Cup.

The BCCI had placed a ceiling on player endorsements, imposing a limit of three sponsorships deals per person as well as restricting single sponsors to a maximum of two players.

The clampdown on endorsements led to speculation in local media that corporate interest influenced selection procedures for the World Cup, and that the players and the board were on a collision course.

"The players had expressed their desire to discuss some of the clauses with the BCCI. BCCI has accepted their point of view. It has been decided that after the Bangladesh tour, a two-member committee comprising of Mr. (N.) Sreenivasan, treasurer of the board and Mr. Shahasank Manohar, the Vice- President would discuss those clauses with the players," Rajiv Shukla, BCCI Vice- President told reporters after a meeting of members at BCCI President Sharad Pawar's residence in New Delhi.

The Indian team is currently attending a conditioning camp in Kolkata before taking off for its tour of Bangladesh from May 10. The five-day camp ends today.

The BCCI is also on the lookout for a replacement for coach Greg Chappel, with Bangladesh coach Dave Whatmore being touted as a strong contender.

Shukla said a committee set up for this purpose would be meeting later in the month.

"The search committee which has been constituted under the chairmanship of Mr. Sharad Pawar, comprising of Mr. Ravi Shastri, Sunil Gavaskar, Venkatraghavan and others... they'll be meeting in the third week of May," he said.

Shastri has filled in as the provisional coach and manager for the Bangladesh tour. Former internationals Robin Singh and Venkatesh Prasad have been roped in as fielding and bowling coach respectively.
