Football star David Beckham will be honoured with the Greatest Briton Overseas award during a glittering ceremony on May 21.
London, May 21 : Football star David Beckham will be honoured with the 'Greatest Briton Overseas' award during a glittering ceremony on May 21.
According to reports, the former England captain leave for London from his Madrid home by his private jet to collect the gong in person at the 'Greatest Britons 2007' event at South Bank.
English journalist and TV presenter Kate Thornton will host the award ceremony, her first prime-time presentation since she was sacked as 'X Factor' host.
It is because of Beckham's outstanding contribution to Britain, both on and off field, that he has been chosen for this award.
His personal intervention in the country's campaign to win the 2012 Olympics is said to have played a very significant role in attracting the Sun readers' votes in his favour.
The tabloid reports that the star-studded annual awards ceremony will be telecast live on ITV1 at 9pm.
Its readers have been casting their votes to elect the Greatest Living Briton, the final decision on which will be taken in a live phone vote during the event.
English singer Robbie Williams, Sir Paul McCartney, Julie Andrews, Margaret Thatcher, and rock band 'The Queen' are in the fray to win the honour in this category.
Former 'Spice Girl' Geri Halliwell, musicians Myleene Klass and Sophie Ellis Bextor, and legendary footballer Sir Geoff Hurst are among celebrities who have been lined up to present awards.
In the category of film award, Borat star Sacha Baron Cohen is facing competition from 'The Queen' actress Dame Helen Mirren.
