PCB in no hurry to select new coach

Terming the appointment of a new cricket coach as a sensitive issue, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has said it is in no hurry to select the right person.

Karachi, June 9 : Terming the appointment of a new cricket coach as a "sensitive issue", the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has said it is in no hurry to select the right person.

"We are not in a hurry... We cannot decide about it in a hurry," The News quoted Zakir Khan, PCB's Director of Cricket Operations, as saying.

He said that the coach's appointment would be among the most important decisions made by the PCB, and it would be done after "detailed deliberations".

Zakir said the PCB-appointed committee, which is looking after the selection of a new coach, was scheduled to meet on Thursday but the meeting did not take place, as one of its members was unavailable.

They would now meet in Lahore early next week to shortlist candidates, he added.

"The committee was supposed to meet yesterday but had to postpone the meeting because one of its members (Imtiaz Ahmed) wasn't available. It would now meet on Monday or Tuesday," he said.

However, Zakir ruled out that the committee, comprising of Mudassar Nazar, Director of the National Cricket Academy (NCA), former Test cricketer Imtiaz Ahmed, and himself, has short listed the possible candidates.

"The committee would only meet for the first time next week so how can it shortlist candidates," he said.

He admitted receiving resumes of 15 candidates. He added that besides these 15 applicants, the names of a couple of more coaches, including former Bangladesh coach Dav Whatmore, can be discussed for the job that left vacant after the death of Bob Woolmer during the World Cup.

"You don't need to have the CVs of top coaches like Whatmore or Greg Chappell. Their credentials are known to everybody," he added.
