The names of the batting trio- Rahul Dravid, Sachin Tendulkar and Sourav Ganguly -- were missing from the list of a preliminary squad of 30 players for the first Twenty-20 World Cup to be held in South Africa in September.
Mumbai, July 7 : The names of the batting trio- Rahul Dravid, Sachin Tendulkar and Sourav Ganguly -- were missing from the list of a preliminary squad of 30 players for the first Twenty-20 World Cup to be held in South Africa in September.
The Selection Committee, which met here today to decide on the list of 30 probables for the new version of the game, said that the three senior players had themselves opted out of the tournament.
"I got a call in the morning from Rahul (Dravid), and he said they (Sachin, Sourav and Rahul) will be opting out of this Twenty20 World Cup," said Dilip Vengsarkar, who is the chairman of the selection committee.
Vengsarkar said the decision of the three senior players was in the spirit of providing opportunity to youngsters.
"... No there is no reason as such... think they want to give a chance to youngsters too... That is why we have chosen a young team also...," he said.
The squad, which will be reduced to 15 players in the middle of July, includes opener Virender Sehwag, who was discarded for the England tour, and some of the country's most promising youngsters.
Another notable inclusion was left-arm seamer Irfan Pathan, whose dip in form has kept him out of the national squad for long.
The Preliminary squad announced includes: Robin Uthappa, Virender Sehwag, Yuvraj Singh, Mahendra Dhoni, Mohammad Kaif, Dinesh Karthik, Rohit Sharma, Gautam Gambhir, Yusuf Pathan, Suresh Raina, Manoj Tiwary, Neeraj Patel, Karan Goel, Cheteshwar Pujara, Abhishek Jhunjhunwala, Rudra Pratap Singh, Ishant Sharma, Zaheer Khan, Irfan Pathan, Ajit Agarkar, Shanthakumaran Sreesanth, Munaf Patel, Joginder Sharma, Piyush Chawla, Harbhajan Singh, Ramesh Powar, Rajesh Pawar, Niranjan Behara, Aniruddh Srikkanth, Praveen Kumar.
