Former Australian leg-spinner Shane Warne has set the record straight on his reported feud with wicketkeeper batsman Adam Gilchrist, his respect for the baggy green cap and why every Australian player should thank Ian Chappell.

Melbourne, Dec.26 : Former Australian leg-spinner Shane Warne has set the record straight on his reported feud with wicketkeeper batsman Adam Gilchrist, his respect for the baggy green cap and why every Australian player should thank Ian Chappell.

In an exclusive column for The Daily Telegraph, Warne described as ''rubbish'' that he and Gilchrist despised each other, but admitted they didn't always agree on several matters.

''Gilly is one of those nice people and is everyone's friend and I suppose I am a bit of a rebel and speak my mind and don't sit on the fence, so we did not always see eye to eye,'' Warne said.

Warne admitted he was angered that Gichrist had accused him and Ian Chappell, the former Australian captain, of losing respect for the baggy green cap.

''On this one, I think Gilly should be sent to the headmaster for six of the best. Every player owes the honour of playing for Australia to Ian,'' he said.

On former coach John Buchanan, Warne said: ''John unfortunately tries to reinvent the wheel all the time. To me, it's about the basics, do them well, and feel prepared, fresh and happy and everything else will take care of itself.''
