Mumbai, Aug 21 : A day after former Indian skipper, Kapil Dev, addressed a press conference of the Indian Cricket League (ICL) as chairman of the group's executive board, Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) today sacked him from the chairmanship of the Bangalore-based National Cricket Academy.
The BCCI decision was expected, as the board had made it clear that it would not associate with anyone who will be joining the rival ICL.
Announcing the decision, BCCI Treasurer N Srinivasan said: "The player decides whether to quit or stay. It is the player's choice to join ICL."
Kapil's term as NCA Chairman was to end in September this year.
To counter the exodus of domestic players to the rival ICL, since the latter is providing a better package, BCCI today announced increasing the total prize money in domestic tournaments from Rs 60 lakh to Rs 4.2 crore.
This match fee for the domestic player has also been increased from Rs 16,000 per match day to Rs 26,000 per match day.
However, BCCI insists that the hike has not been made to stop the chances of players joining the ICL.
"We had already said two years ago that we will give players 26 per cent of our profits," said Srinivasan.
The ICL on Monday announced the list of the first 51 players that included former Pakistan skipper Inzamam-ul Haq, Mohammad Yousuf, Abdul Razzaq and Imran Farhat, former West Indies skipper Brian Lara, South African Lance Klusener Nicky Boje and 45 Indian players that included Dinesh Mongia, JP Yadav and others.
