Commerce CISO to Lead Group of Federal Information Security Officials Who Advise the World's Largest Body of Information Security Professionals on Policies, Trends and Certifications

PALM HARBOR, Fla., Nov. 13 /PRNewswire/ -- (ISC)2(R) ("ISC-squared"), the not-for-profit global leader in educating and certifying information security professionals throughout their careers, today announced it has appointed Michael J. Castagna, CISSP, chief information security officer (CISO) at the Department of Commerce, as the new co-chair of the (ISC)2 U.S. Government Advisory Board for Cyber Security (GABCS).

Castagna will take on the role of board co-chair, a position recently filled by Jane Scott Norris, CISSP-ISSAP, ISSMP, CAP, CISM, former Dean of the School of Applied Information Technology, FSI, the training institute for the Department of State (Retired) who will remain on the board as an active member. Lynn McNulty, CISSP, director of government affairs for (ISC)2, will continue to act as the board's other co-chair.

Established in 2003, the (ISC)2 GABCS is a 20-member volunteer board made up of federal government and industry security executives who provide insight and advice to (ISC)2 on government policies and programs that affect the information security profession, as well as certifications for U.S. government cyber security professionals.

Castagna, a member of the GABCS since June of 2007, will work closely with existing board members, as well as several recently appointed government information security professionals. The newest members of the board include:

-- Paul Grabow, CISSP, manager, Information Security Branch, IT Security Branch, U.S. Senate Sergeant at Arms

-- Jerry L. Davis, CISSP, PMP, deputy chief information officer for IT Security Office of the Chief Information Officer, NASA Headquarters

-- Michael P. Ashworth, CISSP-ISSAP, ISSMP, CAP, CGEIT, director, Information Security Division, Office of Inspector General, U.S. Department of the Interior

-- Mary S. Heard, CISSP, acting associate chief information officer cyber security, U.S. Department of Agriculture

Biography

Michael J. Castagna is the chief information security officer for the U.S. Department of Commerce. Mr. Castagna supports the Department's information technology (IT) security planning, policy, governance, architecture and operations. He develops risk-management-based solutions to increase security and resiliency of the Department's fourteen unique and geographically-dispersed operating units. Previously, he was the NASA IT Security Officer at NASA Headquarters in Washington, D.C. Before joining NASA, he served as a U.S. Marine Corps Intelligence Officer specializing in information technology.

Mr. Castagna has more than 15 years of IT management experience in a variety of functions including network management, software program management and IT security. Mr. Castagna is both a Certified Enterprise Architect and Information System Security Professional. He holds a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from the University of California, Irvine and a Master of Science in Information Technology Management from the Naval Postgraduate School. He frequently speaks at IT security conferences and has various publications in the areas of information technology, intelligence, and intellectual capital management.
