June 26, 2012 - London

Britain's Minister of State for the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, Lord Howell, has welcomed the positive steps being taken by Pakistan and India to build trust and confidence.

Howell said Pakistan and India should take into account the wishes of the Kashmiri people for a long-lasting solution of Kashmir issue, reports the Daily Times.

He said former prime minister Yousuf Raza Gilani, during his last official visit to the UK in May, briefed British Prime Minister David Cameron on these issues.

Commenting on Afghanistan, Howell said: "The UK and Pakistan mutually agree on the importance of peace, stability and security in Afghanistan, and fully support an Afghan-led and Afghan-owned reconciliation process. Afghanistan and Pakistan recognise that their long-term prosperity and security depends on maintaining a good relationship with each other."
